The Kitchen

Welcome to The Kitchen

There’s a lot of cooking that goes on at the Muddy End and even more eating! And as I’ve been told it’s good to share, here are some of my favourite recipes, inspired by what I can get my hands on or what’s going mad in the garden.

If there is one thing that is certainly going mad at the moment it’s The Rhubarb. So to get us going, here are two of my favourite rhubarb recipes, because as those of you with rhubarb will know, when it gets going you need as many ways to cook it as you can find!

Rhubarb Meringue Pie

Rhubarb Meringue Pie, (taken from How to Eat by Nigella Lawson)

If you like tart tarts, or all things lemony as I do, you will love this.
It is pretty and pink and looks impressive but is easy to make. I say ‘easy’, but as much as I love Nigella and I love the way she writes, *lowers voice and looks skyward for a thunderbolt*, sometimes I think she could do with a bullet point or two. So here, for your ‘ease’, is a condensed version of her truly sublime pud.

Boxwallah’s Rhubarb Chutney

An authentic taste of the Raj. This is a really fabulous, fruity and fragrant chutney, that is brilliant with cheese but also delicious with a deeply, savoury lamb curry. Mmmm curry…sorry about that, as I was saying. It is also a genuine Muddy End heirloom, coming, as it does, from the previous occupant of our cottage. She was an indomitable old girl, who had been a proper Deb in the 30’s and had a penchant for fast cars – our neighbours took her to a track day a Thruxton for her 90th birthday! So enjoy and say thanks to Nancy for leaving this.
